Have your cake and...

The original idea behind creating this blog was to document my journey in the cake decorating realm...and so I begin today! That explains the address of this

Recently, I thought seriously about creating business cards to pass along to clients with my cakes and cupcakes. In the process, I ran the name 'Cakealicious' by some trusted colleagues in the hall. Their response - uncomfortable looks flashed at each other coupled with long pauses - told me that was not the way to go! And so...Just Cakes was born!

I'm not even sure when or how it all began...perhaps at my son's first birthday, maybe his second, perhaps Elle's first birthday...I can't be sure of the exact time when I decided that decorating cakes was the perfect creative outlet for me. What I can be sure of is this...if one day this passion, takes over the passion that currently supplies the paycheck...I'd be in my creative glory! Not that I don't love teaching...because I do!

One day, not that long ago, a friend sent me a link to Amy Atlas's website...and all I could think was I want to be HER! She is amazing! Now, I'm clearly not Amy Atlas...but one day, I'd like to be able to create edible masterpieces that send shivers down the spine of those who see them. I want to develop precision in craftsmanship that surpasses any cake you can purchase at the corner grocery store. The process continues, and will for as long as it takes!

One of the most rewarding aspects of creating cakes for special occasions, is making someone feel special. The people I choose to surround myself with, do this for me...everyday. The best part...they don't know they're doing it!

My sister had me create this cake for one of her dear this day, it remains one of my favourites!

There's nothing quite like the feelings surrounding the birth of your first child. I created this cake for a baby shower...
And this...for another sister's surprise 40th birthday!
I created these cupcakes for a very special friend's mom...
So begins the process of reflecting on my creative day I hope to look back on this as the start of something amazing!

More on being a mom...

Mother's Day has come and gone and I'm still smiling! The poem that my son mailed to me, the portrait Elle drew of me with oil pastels and the picture of Ava and I together are three small reminders of how lucky I am!

I so enjoyed the Mother's Day Tea at my daughter's
school...complete with tea and muffins and a French rendition of "Each of Us is a Flower"! Then the hunt was on to unveil which of the 18 or so mommy portrait's was me...I found it on the second try! What a great way to spend a morning!

Sunday the 10th was equally great...first off, dance competition! Another proud mommy moment watching Elle and her group perform. Then it was back home for a visit with family - a day to visit and play and have dinner out!

Sometimes it's easy to forget about the small little blessings in your life. You can get caught up in how hectic life can be and can forget that it really is the small things that matter. The hugs, the snuggles, the cards, the smiles, the time, the little people.

I am so lucky...and I hope I don't ever forget that!

On being a mom...

When the mail arrived today I realized exactly how beautiful it is to be a mom! To my surprise, I found a white envelope with my name and address neatly child-like printing. With a big smile on my face, I opened the envelope and was showered with pink and white mini hearts. Still smiling, I unfolded the paper and read... My Mom as patient as a boa constrictor waiting for its next meal, ...has eyes that sparkle like the stars, ...smells like a bright red orchid blooming in the spring. She has ...fingernails like polished gemstones, ...legs faster than a cheetah, ...lips more red than a rose. She as young as Sidney Crosby, harder than a bee, more silly than a comedian. My Mom I Love You, K. That's what it's all about! I love being a mom!

Cake Time

May in our family is a birthday frenzy! Yesterday we celebrated the birthdays of four little guys who turn 3 within 2 months of each other...and my husband who's birthday is just around the corner!
My girls were adamant that they had to make a cake for daddy and bring it to this early Saturday morning we began the process!Elle and Ava helped make the batter...Elle can almost do this on her own!
As I put the cake in the oven, the girls (Elle escaped before I got her on camera!!) enjoyed the results of their hard work! 9 a.m. isn't too early for chocolate cake, is it?!

Elle decorated around the outside...this is her rendition of a tree and grass. Pretty talented if I do say so myself!

Ava drew a picture of herself and daddy on the top of the cake. She drew with a toothpick and I traced it with icing. There really is nothing better than preschooler drawings!
Kieran wrote the greeting. It was a family affair!

The party was fun and the cakes were delicious...what more could you ask for on a Saturday afternoon!

New Comer!

Today I welcome myself to the wonderful world of blogging! I've been meaning to get started for a while share all the small things in my life that make me smile! Today is the day!

I'm starting with my most recent proud-mom moment...watching my Little Ukrainian Dancer!! She looked so beautiful all dressed up and ready to dance! Her group was amazing...I can still hear the rhythm of the music and look forward to seeing it all again next week!

Friday is usually movie night around these parts...but tonight it's off to the ice cream celebrate the first spring-like day of the year!
I'm taking the girls on a 'date'...enjoying their smiles and time together. Tomorrow it's birthday party time! Cake and presents and so much fun!
